When you're starting to plan out a course it can feel overwhelming trying to determine what needs to be taught.

Figuring out what’s important, and what's not, or determining what’s too overwhelming for your people to absorb.

It can leave you questioning yourself - like how do I even explain this thing?

But there’s a reason why it can feel so hard.

In learning psychology, there’s a concept called the 4 stages of competence.

Stage 1: Unconscious Incompetence

The problem we run into when we set out to create a course is that we are teaching from a place of Unconscious Competence.

Our skills and our knowledge are so deeply integrated within us, that they almost feel like intuition.

Putting ourselves back in the shoes of our learners is HARD!

You’ve probably never been taught how to take something that is intuitive to you and break it down into micro components, actions, skills, thoughts, and mindset shifts.

It’s not as simple as dumping out everything in your brain and chunking it into modules and calling it a done deal.

That is why I am such a huge advocate for working with a learning designer (like me 💁‍♀️) when it comes to creating an online program to help you architect your program in a way that your learner gets massive results.

And if you're looking to get started on your own, the best thing I recommend you do is to get really, really clear on your actions.

Get as specific as possible.

Because one of the first things you can do if you're trying to teach from this place of feeling where things are so integrated is to try and write down every single micro action that you're doing - because that can start to surface things that need to be taught.

I want you to be able to fully lean into your expertise and to bring that magic out into the world in a way that is actually accessible and impactful for your people.

And that starts by making your unconscious, intuitive skills, visible through intentionally mapping your action steps.

The biggest leaders in the industry teaching about course creation actually have marketing backgrounds, not learning design backgrounds.

So it makes sense when you look at their programs and it goes something like this:
Step 1 - choose your topic
Step 2- outline your course
Step 3 - build your course
Step 4-27 - how to launch and sell your course

It’s way easier to sell courses and webinars that promise to teach you ‘the launch secret’ or ‘the hidden code to sales’ when you’re convinced there is a hidden secret.

But let’s cut through the BS: there isn’t a secret.

Launching and marketing and sales boil down to one thing - providing your audience with all the details they need to make an informed and empowered decision about your offer.

That’s it.

No secret.

Your launch gets to be a celebration of your program because you are so wildly obsessed with it and unbelievably confident in the results it gets.

Every piece of content gets to be a love letter to your people showing them what’s possible.

And all those icky feelings you have around selling get to drop away when you kick the bromarketing tactics to the curb.

No more overcoming objections or convincing or coercing energy.

Instead, speaking to the people that you know will be served by your program. Answering questions and making sure they have all the information they need. Showing up not because it’s annoying, but because people are busy and often emails and Instagram posts don’t get seen the first few times.

From the tech nightmare of it all to the editing adventure to the ‘how the heck do I actually show up on camera and not stumble over my words and have to spend 5 million hours in retakes of the same lesson’?

I've heard all the complaints when it comes to recording and editing course videos.

But let’s be real, most of us haven’t had to record ourselves teaching before we create a course for the first time - so it’s natural that it’s going to feel scary and a bit overwhelming. (It’s why I recommend planning in some meltdown time on your first recording day because #beentherebefore).

Here’s what I like to remind my clients: the only person expecting perfection from your videos is you.

People want to learn from humans. They don’t care if you slightly mess up a word or need to check your notes or if your dog climbs on your lap - in fact, that makes the experience feel even more intimate and connected.

As long as you have intentionally structured your lessons so that your content is organized and the actions are clear, people are super forgiving with all the moving pieces that can keep us super stuck.

That’s why in the Incubator, we spend so much time designing your program and mapping out your content that when it comes time to actually record your videos, everything becomes more streamlined.

But I also know, no matter how beautifully designed your program is or how many tools and trainings I give you access to, there will always be times when you need a pep talk or to commiserate with someone who has also been stuck in video recording pit of doom.

Recording videos is just one of the challenges that can arise on your program creation journey - but you don’t have to do it alone.

If I had to pick the biggest problem with most online courses these days I would say: too much content.

Too much content. Too long of videos. Too. many. Things.

Now I find there are two factors driving this firehose of information in online courses:

The main leaders in the industry who are teaching how to create courses don’t have educational backgrounds, they have marketing backgrounds. And when you look through a marketing lens, more content = more valuable.

It’s way more sexy and glamorous to sell a course with 30000 hours of videos and 150000 pages of workbooks and 167 lessons.

And who wouldn’t want to have a valuable course? That’s what we all want - which brings me to #2

You care so deeply about your people, you want to make sure they have everyyyything they could possibly need on their learning journey. But what ends up happening is we bog our people down with too many ‘nice-to-knows’ and before we know it they are completely overwhelmed with all the things.

Here’s the truth: the value in your course doesn’t come from the amount of content.

I’ll say it again: the value in your course doesn’t come from the amount of content. It comes from the way you intentionally structure the learning experience to empower your people to take action as quickly and ease-fully as possible.

I know you want to make your course as valuable as possible, but adding alllllll the resources and info you can possibly think of because your people ✨might✨ need it or they ✨might✨ want to read more about it …. Yeah, it’s having the opposite effect.

Is it a NEED to have, or a NICE to have?

Less is more- unless it helps them take direct action towards the focus of your course, CHOP IT.
